Free-Flow Facility

Definition:
A free-flow facility is one in which users are not required to stop. The most common type of free-flow facilities are interstates or freeways, where access is restricted to select cross roads. A free-flow facility can also be a roadway of lower classification and possibly lower speeds, where all stop conditions have been eliminated and more access is provided to the local road network than if the facility were a freeway or interstate.
Benefits:
- Facilitates travel along the major roadway by eliminating stopping points.
- Reduces congestion and improves safety by reducing conflict points.
